What is Insurance Appraisal?

The Appraisal provision in many commercial and homeowner policies is an alternative to a lawsuit for dispute resolution.

In some policies, Appraisal must be attempted before any lawsuit can proceed. The Appraisal process begins when one party, usually the Insured, submits a written demand to the other. Each chooses an Appraiser, and the two Appraisers choose an Umpire. The two Appraisers then estimate the damages and work together to set the amount of the loss.

Any irreconcilable differences are submitted to the Umpire. Agreement by any two of these three sets the amount of the loss.

Each party pays its own appraiser. The parties share the expense of the umpire if needed.

Getting started

You must first inform the Insurance Company in writing demanding Appraisal and identifying your Appraiser. The Appraisers will take it from there and will keep you apprised of the process.

Submit your information using the Contact Form below, or call (337) 453-0647 and we'll discuss your situation with you. If you choose us as your Independent Appraiser, we'll send you an acknowledgment letter to forward to your insurance carrier notifying them of your demand for appraisal. We'll take it from there.

Testimonials

Hurricane Ida caused significant damage to my home which eventually required a lawsuit against my homeowners insurance company.  As a part of the process, we had to engage an appraiser to assess the home’s loss.  Roy Couvillion made a site visit and I immediately felt a comfort level that he would properly assess the home.  Throughout the process, his desire to “get it right the first time” with thorough research and logical deciphering of each and every detail was evident.  His background as an engineer has aided his capacity to articulate damage loss in a way that is almost indisputable.  My family and I are very grateful for Roy’s assessment of our property.  He will be recommended to anyone that may be in need of this scope of work.

Jimmy Klingman - Houma, LA

Roy was very professional and knowledgeable about the whole insurance process and structure of home. Our insurance company was trying to pay less than half of all repairs. Roy walked through the home very thoroughly looking at all details which needed to be addressed. He was very patient in explaining the whole process and answering any questions we had. He also caught a few items our contractor missed in the quote. My insurance company ended up paying full amount of repairs after Roy submitted his report. If you need an insurance appraiser, I highly recommend Roy!

Mistie LeBlanc  - Kaplan, LA

Roy was very professional, reliable, and courteous during the entire appraisal process.  My insurance company was refusing to pay me a dime when it was obvious my roof was not replaceable and I needed someone intelligent and honest to represent the truth and Roy came through.  My insurance company went from offering me nothing to replacing my entire roof and covering the entire cost because of Roy's work.

I wouldn't trust anyone else in Louisiana to handle my appraisals in the future.

Shaun Sanghani - Alexandria, LA

I was opposite of Roy in a very complicated, drawn-out, and contentious claim with unique construction, and a very fatigued policyholder. He demonstrated a remarkable ability to accurately critique the expert’s reports, but what impressed me most is that he used the carrier’s experts’ opinions to support my client’s position to replace the entire roof!

As he put it, “The facts are the facts.”

I’m an insurance claims professional, and if I ever need an appraiser, I’m calling Roy.

Rich Lyon – Licensed Public Adjuster

The appraisal process can be challenging at best; my experience with Roy was nothing short of exceptional.

I was a manager for a large hail/wind event in the Midwest when I met Mr. Couvillion, his experience in claims, along with his engineering background and understanding of construction processes made him an invaluable member of our team. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with his co-workers and was looked upon as the “go-to” guy.

Once you meet Roy Couvillion you won’t forget him, he is, as noted above, exceptional.

Thank you for the experience.

Richard Mahoney - Pilot Catastrophe services manager

Mr. Roy Couvillion was the biggest asset in our home repair journey!! What started off as a 2-year nightmare of a battle with an insurance company for an insurance claim turned out to be a blessing with the help of Mr. Roy. He had us taken care of within a month!!!! I would never want another appraiser for my home. He had my family’s best interest at heart and did all of the work to make sure a fair amount was granted for our repairs.

His professionalism and caring heart are unmatched in what seemed like the dark world of insurance claims. He treated us and our home like his own family. I can’t thank him enough!

Lydia Guidry -  Church Point, LA

I worked an appraisal where Roy was the policyholder’s appraiser. He impressed me with his depth of knowledge and understanding of the process such that I now recommend him to others.

Working with a guy like that really simplifies the process.

Robbie Poche – LA Registered Appraiser

I trained under Roy Couvillion years ago; to say that his methods are unorthodox is an understatement. While he obviously understands the technical aspects of damage and adjusting, it is his systematic and thorough approach to the inspection and the relationship with policyholders that separates him from the rest. When he leaves an inspection, the policyholders are visibly more relaxed and confident that they are in good hands.

Even ten years later, I still practice what he taught me, and those lessons have served me well.
